Transforming your garage into a home addition or living quarters is a smart way to stretch your budget on renovation. The garage is frequently the most misused and underused part of your home. However, if you need additional space for a family room, home office, hobby room or additional bedroom, transforming your garage is an excellent option.
Garage conversions are not as messy or troublesome as additions, which often affect a part of the existing living quarters in your home. Most garages already have existing electricity and plumbing that only requires upgrading, which is not as costly as installing from scratch.
Transforming your garage can create your present home as the house of your dreams and help you prevent the cost of moving to a new home. Before you proceed on your conversion plans, make sure your ideas conform to the local regulations and building codes in the state.
Here are a few suggestions on garage conversion:
1. One of the most common types of conversion is converting it into a hall, including it as part of your current drawing room, making your home appear bigger. This is very convenient since many garages are already connected to the front part of your home. To make the whole space highly attractive, you can match the flooring patterns and add electrical systems and good design to accommodate your furniture.
2. Whether your garage is detached or attached will help encourage your design. Both styles have advantages and disadvantages. In an attached type, you may open a direct passageway from your home to the new space removing the need for exiting from one structure to another. It also increases the use of space such as a family room, playroom or master bedroom. A detached garage is great when you need a bigger separation such as a recording studio, home office, guest room or living quarters for college children.
3. Your living and storage space, size of the garage and zoning regulations could influence whether you convert a part or the entire garage. If you want to convert the full area, you should consider proving a covered parking place for your cars, like a carport. If you have a double garage, you may consider converting only half of the area and retain the other for storage or parking. Careful planning on your storage needs and knowing your locality's requirements for parking and regulations will help determine whether to make a full or partial conversion.
4. Another great idea is to convert it into a children's playroom or a study. This is easier than converting it into a drawing room since the facilities required are not so costly or attractive. The flooring need not match with the rest of the house and can be made out of cheaper tiles, or carpeted so children will find it easier to move around. The only thing that is necessary is to ensure the safety features if it is to be converted into children's play area or study. Sometimes can be quite careless, so slipper surfaces and sharp edges must be avoided. Electrical switches and related controls should be located beyond children' reach. The room should have good lighting, well ventilated and have shelves and cabinets where they can store books and toys. The area should also have a bigger entrance with easy to operate locks and not the automatic ones to prevent children from locking themselves up.
5. Another viable conversion is to convert it into a utility area. This can be done if the garage is located at the back or side of the house, preferably nearer the kitchen.
Converting your garage as a home addition is a style that is quickly becoming popular, as people have started to realize that having an exclusive garage is waste of precious space, which is expensive these days. The conversion does not only increase the utility value but also helps increase the value of your property.
